In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
