Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of his move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
