The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
